Granite Powerful Natural Stone

Granite is an igneous plutonic rock made of quartz, feldspar and mica, distinguished by exceptional hardness, density and durability. Its characteristic granular structure and broad colour spectrum make every slab an individual one-off. At CAMT you can source granite from select quarries in Scandinavia, Brazil, India and Portugal – as a raw slab, cut to size, or fully finished for your project.

Properties of Granite

Granite is among the hardest and most durable natural stones there is: at 6 to 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, it withstands scratches, impacts and heavy use almost unscathed. Its low porosity also makes it acid-resistant – a decisive advantage over marble, especially in heavily used kitchens and outdoor areas.

Granite is also extremely robust climatically: it is frost-proof, heat-resistant and tolerates direct sunlight without fading. A slight roughening of the polished surface over the years is normal but does not affect function. Thanks to its low water absorption, granite requires little day-to-day maintenance.

Origin Scandinavia, Brazil, India, Portugal
Hardness 6–7 Mohs, very hard
Colour spectrum Grey, black, red, blue, green, beige
Surfaces Polished, flamed, honed, bush-hammered
Formats Slabs, tiles, custom cuts
Maintenance Low – little to no sealing needed

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Extremely hard and scratch-resistant – ideal for heavily used surfaces.
  • Acid-resistant and heat-resistant – unaffected by everyday stains.
  • Frost-proof and weather-resistant – also suitable for outdoor use.
  • Low maintenance thanks to low water absorption.

Cons

  • Less fine veining than marble – a more granular, uniform structure.
  • Heavy weight requires careful planning of the substructure.
  • Its hardness makes processing demanding – cutting times may be longer.
  • Cooler feel compared to warmer-looking natural stones.

Surfaces – From Gloss to Texture.

The surface finish determines the look, feel and slip resistance of your granite – we'll advise you on the right choice for your project:

  • Polished – High-gloss, emphasises colour depth and grain, classic for floors and countertops.
  • Flamed – Coarsely textured and slip-resistant, ideal for outdoor areas and stair treads.
  • Honed (matte) – Evenly velvety, conceals everyday signs of wear.
  • Bush-hammered – Fine-grained roughened texture, especially slip-resistant for outdoor spaces.

Care – How Granite Stays Beautiful.

Thanks to its low porosity, granite is one of the lowest-maintenance natural stones. With just a few simple steps, the surface stays in top condition for decades:

  • Cleaning with warm water and a mild cleaner is generally enough.
  • Sealing is not mandatory but does further enhance the shine.
  • Abrasive cleaning agents should still be avoided long-term, even with granite.
  • No special protective measures are needed, even under heavy use.
