Quartzite is a rock formed by the metamorphism of sandstone, with exceptionally high hardness and a distinctively layered texture. Its high quartz content gives it a subtly shimmering surface and a durability that can even surpass granite. At CAMT you can source quartzite from select quarries in Brazil, India and Norway – as a raw slab, cut to size, or fully finished for your project.
Properties of Quartzite
At 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, quartzite is one of the hardest natural stones in the CAMT range – more durable than granite and nearly impervious to scratches, heat and frost. Its low water absorption also makes it extremely dimensionally stable, even under strongly fluctuating outdoor temperatures.
Despite its enormous hardness, quartzite can be precisely cut and finished thanks to modern CNC technology. Some quartzite varieties have low porosity – here we recommend occasional sealing to preserve the shine long-term. - Cleaning with warm water and a mild cleaner is generally sufficient.
- For more porous varieties, occasional sealing offers extra protection against stains.
- Abrasive cleaning agents should still be avoided long-term.
- Frost- and UV-resistant – no special protective measures needed outdoors.
