Sandstone Warm Natural Stone with Character

Sandstone is a sedimentary rock made of cemented sand grains, with warm, natural colouring and a pleasantly textured surface. Regionally distinctive – such as the well-known Elbe sandstone from Saxon Switzerland – it is one of Germany's most traditional building materials. At CAMT you can source sandstone from Saxony and other select regions – as a raw slab, cut to size, or fully finished for your project.

Properties of Sandstone

Sandstone impresses with its warm character and pleasantly textured, lightly rough surface. Hardness varies noticeably depending on the binding agent – from softer, easily worked varieties to more durable ones. Its open-pored structure makes it "breathable", an advantage for the building physics of both historic and modern facades.

Due to its porosity, regular sealing is recommended, especially outdoors, to prevent weathering and staining. Bush-hammered or brushed surfaces further emphasise the characteristic grain structure. We're happy to advise you at the CAMT showroom in Riesa on the right variety for your project.

Origin Saxony (Elbe Sandstone Mountains), India
Hardness 2.5–4 Mohs, soft to medium-hard
Colour spectrum Yellow, beige, red, grey
Surfaces Bush-hammered, sawn, brushed
Formats Slabs, paving, custom cuts
Maintenance Medium to high – sealing recommended

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Warm, natural tones and a pleasantly textured feel.
  • Breathable, open-pored structure – proven for facades.
  • Easy to work, even for delicate profiles and ornamentation.
  • Regional origin from Saxony – short transport distances possible.

Cons

  • Porous structure requires regular sealing.

Surfaces – Warm and Textured.

The surface finish determines the look, feel and slip resistance of your sandstone – we'll advise you on the right choice for your project:

  • Bush-hammered – Fine-grained roughened texture and slip-resistant, ideal for floors and stairs.
  • Sawn – Smooth, flat edges for facades and precisely fitted laying patterns.
  • Brushed – Emphasises the natural grain structure and colour nuances.
  • Split-face – Traditional split edge for rustic walls and edging.

Care – How Sandstone Stays Beautiful.

Sandstone is porous and sensitive to moisture and dirt. With the right care, however, its warm look will last for decades:

  • Regular sealing protects against moisture, stains and growth.
  • Clean with water and a soft brush – no aggressive cleaners.
  • Remove moss and algae growth early to prevent weathering.
  • For facades, ensure adequate rear ventilation.
